Where To Start With Database Management

Database management is a broad and intimidating field. There’s a time that both the professional-to-be database engineer and the hobbyist at heart database enthusiast feel incredibly timorous. Database management by no means is a walk in the park and the learning curve can be quite steep, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to learn, no matter what skill-level one hopes to achieve. Whenever tackling such a broad topic as database management or computer programming, the main struggle which keeps many from ever achieving their goal is the fact they have no where to start, no real direction or they simply jumped in at a level they shouldn’t have. Starting at the correct place is just as crucial to success as ending at the correct place.

In order to start one must decide what sort of database management system they would like the use. With a myriad of choices such as Microsoft Access, MySQL, DB2 or Oracle it can be extremely tough for one to pick which system they should begin with. While all systems have their ups and down, for anyone that has no real understanding, this process of getting started can be aided with diligent Internet research or a visit to one of the many online communities to ask for their opinions. To approach the subject correctly one must ask themselves, what resources do I have? How fast do I need my database to react? And what kind of time am I willing to put into learning this platform? All of these questions are crucial to picking the correct database management application and solution.

Once a database management system has been decided upon, the next step will be to learn to interface with the database management system and how to perform basic functions. Most often the database management system will have a homepage with a FAQ and basic tutorials; this is the perfect place to start. Once a database master-to-be has read the basic texts that either came with the database management system or was provided on the site, a choice needs to be made. A less serious enthusiast could easily get by reading some of the many online tutorials that are freely available through various sites and communities. The more serious student may want to pick up a book on the subject. While most of the information in these books is often on the web for free, the information is usually scattered across many websites and can be written in a style that is less than perfect. O’Reilly publishes many great beginner books in the field of database management and all are worth checking out for anyone just beginning or those who feel the need to brush up on the basics.

The information that will lead to becoming a great database administrator or engineer is out there, the only problem is finding where it starts. Jumping in at a level that is far too advanced can easily discourage those who would have otherwise made great administrators from sticking with it. The best piece of advice that can be given to anyone starting the long journey to being competent in the field of database management is to spend a great deal of time and research getting started. If enough care is put into those first few decisions and finding the perfect place to start, the rest will fall in place.
